Tracking Orders in Auto Transportation
Believe it or not, tracking orders in the auto transport industry is a relatively new development. Advanced technology has started to bloom and have a major impact within the industry. The problem is that more often than not, most are resistant to change.
Like any industry, there is a specific structure & dynamic, but more than that, the transport industry is more of an art rather than a science. The growth & rise of new technology within the industry appears as a major threat to some. Obviously, it’s not, but this statement alone should give you somewhat of an idea of what you are dealing with when it comes to various transporters.
Truck drivers are usually down to earth people, who make their living out on the road. They either don’t really have the time to play around with technology like we do, or they’re just simply not interested.
Most carriers will use smartphones and access to the internet to search loads, schedule transports, communicate with their brokers and the clients that they ship for. I mentioned earlier that technology is affecting the transportation industry (in a positive light), but just because a carrier can utilize technology to make their job easier.. It doesn’t mean they will.
The dynamic behind transportation has worked for years and years, and in the minds of some transporters, switching it up can be signing a death certificate. You’ve heard the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”. This is the exact mentality of more than most transporters out there. That is a reason why most carriers don’t provide GPS tracking services for their shipments.
Don’t get me wrong, there are several carriers out there that do. Usually they are companies that run a newer trucks or a larger fleet of trucks. They are also usually owned and operated by the “new generation”. Knowing exactly where your loads and drivers are is important if you are managing a large transportation company and are not just an owner-operator. Large fleets are mostly controlled by a dispatch office, which is a small entity in a much larger firm. Most transporters are owner-operators who own their own truck and run on their own hours, while someone usually dispatches from their home. Typically a spouse, relative or friend. While this may not seem ideal to you, this works for many.
These owner-operators pretty much go where they want, when they want. They pick their loads, they pick their routes, and they really aren’t beholden to anyone except the customers they ship for, and many of them are of the mindset that if you want to know where your vehicle is at, call them.
t makes sense; they really don’t have the time to implement an expensive GPS-tracking system on their truck and also have a receiver that the dispatcher watches. Some view it as a violation of privacy rights. Others view it as an unnecessary expense – most just tell you to call. This works as often as not, but it can be difficult to get a hold of a driver, as they are not allowed to talk on phones or text while they are driving, per the law.
Change is slow in the car shipping industry, but even as we speak more and more carriers are upgrading their systems, trucks, and tracking systems to take advantage of new technologies. note that we track every vehicle we ship, unlike some companies.
Here at Millennium Transport we offer a couple of different tracking options. We are a broker and run 2 trucks as a carrier. Our trucks are equipped with GPS tracking and a link is sent out upon booking for our clients to track their order from start to finish. Our brokerage also has a 5 step tracking window in which it will show when the job has been posted, assigned, picked up, delivered and finally paid. This can be utilized right on our website with your quote number & e-mail address. When it comes to brokered orders, we are highly aware that you may want to know more than what this window gives. That is why we assign you a personal representative who you have access to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via phone, SMS and e-mail. We make sure to keep you informed every step of the way and to let you know where exactly the driver is with your vehicle.
Of course, technology is always changing and advancing and we are keen on staying aware of the advancements to further make your transport experience even better. We improve a little more every day.
