Auto Transport Quote Factors

Any auto transportation company you might come across has a specific set of criteria when it comes to quoting a transport. We hope to shed some light on some of the factors that transport companies look at and use to accurately price your shipment and will explain why these factors can affect your quote in such different and drastic ways. We want to give you the best understanding of what you are getting into when it comes to shopping around for transportation services.

Origin & Destination

This is obvious, as it is the main determining factor when it comes to quoting your shipment. Transport companies will determine the mileage between the pickup and delivery location and use it as a baseline when determining your quote.

Vehicle Type

The larger the vehicle, the more you can expect to pay. Many SUV’s, Minivans, Pickup Trucks, Cargo Vans, & Other large vehicles come with varying fees due to the oversized & overweight nature of the haul. Any vehicles with lift kits, adjusted suspensions or modifications may also incur additional fees.

Vehicle Condition

The condition of your vehicle plays a major part in determining your quote. I’m not saying if your vehicle is dirty and old that you will be charged less or if your vehicle is brand new with a fresh wax and wash you’re going to be charged more. When we say vehicle condition, we mean if the vehicle is operable or not. Inoperable vehicles can cost $100-200 more than an operable vehicle of the same make & model that is headed along the same route. This is due to the fact that inoperable vehicles require winch cables & other special equipment to be loaded and unloaded from the truck. Cars that are fully operational are driven onto the carrier, whereas that cannot be accomplished with a vehicle that is not running.

Wrecked, totaled & vehicles missing wheels are even more costly to ship than a vehicle that is just inoperable. More likely than not these vehicles will require a flatbed to transport them.

Carrier Type

Vehicles can either be transported in an open car carrier or an enclosed trailer. Open carrier transports are the most common method of shipping a vehicle. However, some vehicles such as high end sports cars, classic or antique cars and expensive luxury cars usually require an enclosed carrier in order to protect their high value. Enclosed carrier shipments also cost more.

Whether you ship via open or enclosed, your vehicle is insured by the company. All coverage is different based on the company you select. Here at Millennium Transport, we offer coverage of $250,000.00 on open carrier transport and coverage up to $1,000,000.00 on enclosed carrier transports.

When you are shipping in an enclosed trailer, keep in mind that your vehicle will be with less vehicles than if it was to be shipped on an open carrier which can hold up to 10 vehicles. This will also be a factor in determining your quote.

Pick-Up Ready Date

Most transportation companies give a general pickup window of 2-10 days from the time the order has been booked. There are some instances where a you might need a car picked up and delivered in a smaller time frame. Most companies give their customers the choice to opt for an expedited shipping service. Expedited shipping services cost more money than a standard shipment due to the fact that the company needs to cater to your needs as well as work around their schedule and lines.

Most companies also offer standby shipping services. Standby shipping is where you pay a low price purposely, knowing full well that it could take longer for your vehicle to be picked up and delivered. You are basically giving complete control to the company at this point to plan their routes and find the most convenient time for them to pickup and deliver.

We highly recommend placing your shipment order as far out as possible. We find the sweet spot to be within 1-2 weeks from the time you would like your vehicle picked up. This gives plenty of time for the company to work you into their lines & gives you the best possible chance of securing a fair & affordable rate.
